Review Film Astro (2018) Full Movie
There was a time in the early 90’s when some folks considered Gary Daniels to be a low-rent Van Damme. I was never one of those people. Early on, I saw something in him and I knew he would become a star. He dominated the DTV scene and appeared in films released by companies like PM Entertainment and Dimension Films. He’s a bit older now, still doing his thing and branching out on the types of films he headlines. Astro is an action/sci-fi hybrid from writer/director Asif Akbar and is coming to VOD on June 8th from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

After the death of his wife, Jack Adams (Daniels) and his daughter Laura (Courtney Akbar) live alone on a ranch. On Jack’s birthday, a group of mysterious strangers pay them a visit, including Allen Smith (Michael Paré), an old military friend. He invites the two of them to the home of Alexander Biggs (Marshal Hilton), another old friend, who owns a multi-million dollar company and wants Jack to come work for him. It almost seems too good to be true, but after he and his daughter are attacked, he decides to take Biggs up on the offer. He learns that Biggs has discovered a new planet, as well as an alien species. This all seems amazing, but Biggs has an ulterior motive and Jack is willing to risk his own life in order to find out what that may be.

The great thing about science fiction is that anything is possible. We suspend disbelief for the sake of the story. When watching Astro, it’s easy to notice the film was shot on a very limited budget. However, what the cast and crew lack there, they make up for with story, character, and passion, which is far more important than having a huge budget. There are some really interesting ideas executed, as well as stressing the importance of family. This is something I can really get behind.

Gary Daniels is a terrific lead and, having played similar characters before, you have no problem buying into his portrayal. Action was not necessarily the focal point, however the two action scenes he does have are pretty solid. It was also a great pleasure to see both Michael Paré and Louis Mandylor while Marshall Hilton brings just enough charm and underhanded menace to Biggs, delivering a memorable villain.

There were a couple of minor issues I had, such as having both Louis Mandylor and Gary Daniels in a film together, but no real fighting action between them. Mandylor is a veteran of the series Martial Law, which starred martial arts legend Sammo Hung. He had some great fights on that series, so it would have been a treat to see them go toe-to-toe. Not to mention, Daniels previously fought Mandylor’s brother, Costas Mandylor, in the live action Fist of the North Star film.

Also, due to the budget, the space ship sequences were a bit cringe-worthy. The ending also left me a bit empty, being a straight up cliffhanger so it feels incomplete. I really hope they are able to pull off a sequel to see what happens to these characters next, but perhaps that will be explored in the book series Asif Akbar and Bernard Selling are currently working on, which is due out in July on Amazon.

Astro is far from a perfect film, but it’s easy to admire just how ambitious Akbar was with the film and with Sony distributing, it should find its audience.
