Recently, we posted the trailer for Adam Gierasch’s House by the Lake. When asked if I wanted to review it, I jumped at the chance! This movie is my kind of horror-thriller flick, a character-driven story with the anticipation of is the Fishman real? Did this movie live up to my expectation? Read further to find out!
The premise of the story written by Josh Burnell is simple and relatable. Karen and Scott retreat to the family’s lake house, with their autistic daughter Emma, to repair their broken and strained relationships. Karen and Scott hire a nanny, Gwen. To the surprise of Karen and Scott, Emma takes well to Gwen. While there, Emma becomes focused on an imaginary friend, ‘The Fishman’. The further Emma becomes fixated with ‘The Fishman’, the further the relationships are strained.
Karen (Anne Dudek) and Scott (James Callis) portray a realistic married couple dealing with marital issues that seem compounded by the fact they have an autistic daughter that they both adore but sometimes not sure how to handle her. Emma acted superbly by Amiah Miller, encompasses the autistic spectrum and I personally believe we need more movies addressing both the challenges and that autistic persons are not weird, they have a different way of dealing with everyday life.
The anticipation and build up of is ‘The Fishman’ real, is spot on. That is one of my favorite parts of a great thriller. There is a real suspense of is ‘The Fishman’ real or is it all in Emma’s world? I will not give it away in the review. You need to see this film to find out.
Final Thoughts:
I recommend this film. House by the Lake is definitely a work of a talented team of actors, writers, and director. A character-driven film that will leave you guessing up until the end, is ‘The Fishman’ real? This film is available on VOD on October 10th.
