In case you haven’t seen the first one, why are you reading this? This is a review for the sequel, but I digress. The original Dead In Tombstone is a horror western starring Danny Trejo. The film centers around outlaw Guerrero who is betrayed and killed by his own gang. He goes to Hell where the devil makes a deal with him. In exchange for his revenge, Guerrero must be the devil’s servant. That’s pretty much all you need to know.
Now in Dead Again In Tombstone Guerrero returns to keep an ancient relic that can bring Hell on Earth from Colonel Jack Boomer (Gary Busey) and save the town where his daughter lives. In doing so he must team with his daughter, and a priest who may be more than he seems.
Danny Trejo is one of my favorite actors, so I’m going to try and be as unbiased as possible but I thoroughly enjoyed Dead Again In Tombstone. Trejo masterfully plays the Guerrero character well. He’s gruff like most of Trejo’s characters but you can’t help but have empathy for him. At its core Dead Again In Tombstone is a tale of redemption. How late is too late for a man to save his soul?
Of course there are a few flaws. The action movie syndrome of unlimited ammo plagues the film, and I would have liked a bit more depth to the story. I like a fast pace to a film, but at times the pace seemed a bit too rushed. It was hard to get to know some of the new characters to properly feel anything for them. The score seemed a bit out of place for the time era but I liked it. It brought a bit more excitement to the film.
Flaws aside, Dead Again In Tombstone is a fun shoot em up western flick with a horror twist. I would recommend it to fans of both genres, given that you see the first film beforehand.
