Uncork’d Entertainment has a knack for picking up low-budget films that show great potential, and The Covenant fits their catalog to a tee. We’ve got a hugely talented cast and a great script, but it looks like a film where the actors provided their own clothes, and make-up (beyond special FX) was minimal. It’s a movie that was filmed in places, as opposed to sets, meaning that there are literal constraints in terms of what can be seen. The Covenant does the most with the resources it had, creating a film whose reach may have extended its grasp, but it really shocked me by going big in Act 3 with some seriously top-notch horror excitement.
In terms of plot, The Covenant sticks to what is now a common model made popular by The Conjuring and other films based on the case files of demonologists Ed and Loraine Warren: There’s a haunting; experts are called; haunting becomes possession; calamity ensues. On paper, The Covenant reads like a reboot of The Amityville Horror (especially to avid fans of the franchise, like me—there’s even a shout-out to Annabelle!), but again, that 3rd Act kicks so much ass I’m willing to forgive any lack of originality. And where most supernatural horror ends with a ghost being banished, The Covenant’s ending may, in fact, be the beginning of the Apocalypse.
Official Synopsis: After the tragic deaths of her husband and daughter, Sarah Doyle moves back to her childhood home with her estranged brother, Richard. It’s not long before Sarah begins to experience supernatural phenomena of a violent and hostile nature. Bewildered and desperate, Richard enlists the aid of a paranormal investigator who confirms that Sarah has become possessed by a powerful demon. Together, the three men will go to battle to save Sarah’s soul.
Directed by Robert Conway (Krampus Unleashed), and starring Monica Engesser (Krampus the Reckoning), Clint James (The Encounter), Owen Conway (Exit to Hell), Sanford Gibbons (Tombstone), and Maria Olson (I Spit On Your Grave : Deja-Vu), The Covenant hits February 7th.
The Covenant is a comforting mélange of familiar horror tropes, a chicken soup for the twisted souls of Horror Freaks. We’ve got all the trappings of a modern Gothic: A female protagonist with a dark past whose either being haunted or is going insane. We’ve got the crazy next door neighbor (Olson) who’s a religious zealot of the Margaret White variety. We’ve got a supernatural harbinger, a man in black who’s reminiscent of Phantasm’s Tall Man. We’ve got the ineffectual priest followed by a maverick priest who saves the day. We’ve even got the scientist-sidekick, a component popularized by the Insidious Franchise. A lot of good stuff, but nothing truly unique.
But did I mention there’s a kick-ass 3rd Act? Well it bears repeating! The climax is taboo and graphic; it “goes there”. There’s a grueling exorcism followed by cataclysmic destruction. And don’t expect a happy ending; The Covenant is dark, nihilistic, disturbing, and a whole lot of fun!
